I received this novelette for free from Thought Catalog for an honest review. I'm rating it 2.5 stars. It was okay, but too confusing to get into.
This novelette is about a girl named Katherine Petersen who is 29 years old. She lives in an apartment a little ways from her parents. She needed to move out because of their constant snoring. She was worried about sleep apnea. Her parents had it and apparently her grandparents. She wanted to make sure she didn't have it as well. So she makes an appointment with her doctor and he says film yourself sleeping for a few weeks and I'll watch the tapes to determine if you have sleep apnea. It will save you a couple thousand dollars.
-Now I know this is a fictional book, but this is a "contemporary", so I assume normal things apply. Can a doctor really do this? Determine sleep apnea through watching you sleep?
This started my confusion with the book. Then comes the crazy part. A man has been sneaking into her room every night and laying next to her while she slept.
Okay! This is where I thought "oh the book is going to get super interesting!" It did at first. The whole guessing of who this random person was and how he was getting into her house. But then it dragged into weird territory. Why was the dad keeping the notes and videos of the guy away from the daughter? Why is he not telling her all the information. How was this going on for years with out any headway in the case? The police were somewhat looking into right?
Then the book jumps ahead in time and we meet a new character. He seems nice. Katherine is really enjoying this man's company when things get weird again.
-I can only handle so much weird. This was beyond weird. It didn't make any sense. How was this all happening? It is too much of a coincidence for Katherine to bump into this new guy. It is too convenient that the old stalker guy has known her whereabouts for years. It's all very weird.
Okay so now, I think, can this book get any weirder in this short amount of time? Yep! Another bizarre thing happens. What?!? And then a kidnapping and a house fire!
That ending killed me. So did everything really happen? Is she dreaming? Is she on crazy drugs that she is unaware of? Why does this book start and end with sleep apnea. Is this some kind of medical condition that we all should be worried about? No longer are we scared of monsters in the closets and under our beds, but the sleep apnea machine and the loud wheezing noises it emits?
As you can see, the book has potential. It started off strong with the weird sleep stalker. I could have gotten on board with that story line, but it just jumps around too much with more and more bizarre outcomes. Also this novelette is chock full of grammatical errors. Wrong words were used. Hard to read sentences were on every page. I was able to get the jest of everything written, but at the same time having to re-read a sentence over and over to get it's meaning was distracting.
I want to thank Caitlin Millan for sending me the book for free. I was really hoping to love it. Just not my cup of tea.
